About The Anthem Project
We have screened the documentary Anthem for audiences many times, and the most common comment has been "This belongs in the schools." We agree!
The Anthem Project is an online resource for teachers with lesson plans and activities based on Make Your Mark Media's independent film Anthem that will help them explore the story of The Star-Spangled Banner in their classrooms. Created in partnership with the Maryland State Department of Education and Anne Arundel County Public Schools, this project is partially funded through a grant from Star-Spangled 200 and from sponsorship by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Prince George’s County Committee on The War of 1812 and private donations.
Anthem was first broadcast on Maryland Public Television in December 2012, and will be aired on PBS stations through June of 2015. This independent documentary film tells the story behind Francis Scott Key's creation of "The Star-Spangled Banner" and explores the role of music and patriotism during The War of 1812. Anthem features musical performances and interviews with historians and music experts interspersed with maps, documents and rich images of the people, places and events of the era.
Anthem contains a wealth of information presented through interviews, narration and musical performances and is for audiences of all ages. Drawing from the research, artwork, maps, documents and almost 100 hours of interviews, musical performances and location footage obtained for Anthem, Make Your Mark Media has created segments focusing on various aspects of this period in history. With a combination of music and images, these stories can come alive for students.
This project has been financed in part with State Funds from the Maryland War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission, an instrumentality of the State of Maryland. However, the contents and opinions do not necessarily reflect the views or policies of the Maryland War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission.
